Making a Molehill out of a Mountain
Chances are that at some point in our lives, we have taken a trivial challenge and perceived it to be bigger than it is, a behavior more commonly known as making “a mountain out of a molehill”. The question is can we flip this idea on its head and make a molehill out of a mountain? The simple answer is Yes. Let’s explore this further.
Of course when we are talking trivial challenges those are easy to tackle. Even when the challenge seems insurmountable at first, I have found that there is always a way to overcome the challenge. What I have realized is that it is our choice and our perception that made these mountains appear in the first place before they became the barriers to our success!
Why do we make mountains out of molehills? Well, very often, it is because we have unfounded fears or simply the lack of education we need to understand the challenge in front of us. A great example of this in MY life came when I considered taking on the challenge of running marathons across all 7 continents, including Antarctica.
If you are like most people, you are thinking “why run a marathon in Antarctica?” How do you even get there? What about those huge sheets of ice? What about the freezing waters that you have to get across? Are there polar bears that will chase me? What about the killer penguins? Of course, I made up the “polar bears and killer penguins” to make the point that some of our perceived threats are real, but others not so much…. because neither polar bears or killer penguins, exist in Antarctica.
I found that as I learned more, my fears subsided and those imaginary mountains which were my fears and doubts, started melting into molehills. I quickly learned how I would get to Antarctica, how I would prepare to run a marathon there, what the risks were, how I could mitigate those risks and before you know it, l I was on my way!
Now, what are the mountains in your life that are keeping you from success you deserve and how many of those mountains can you flip and turn into molehills? My own experience tells me there are many, many opportunities to turn mountains in your life into molehills. Try it out for yourself and you will see.
