Reaching Higher

Do you or someone you know settle for less when deep inside you know you are capable of doing more? Have you ever wondered why you don’t reach higher when something tells you that you can?

One of the greatest sculptors, painters  and architects of all time, Michaelangelo, once said, “The greatest danger is not that we aim too high and miss it, but that we aim too low and reach it,” Too often, we let their fear of failure outweigh their desire to succeed. We need to be ok with failing our way to success.

In her ground-breaking book, “Grit”, Dr. Angela Duckworth, shares an insight from a noted Harvard Psychologist, Dr. William James. Dr. James wanted to understand and answer the question about how people differ in their pursuit of goals. After a long and distinguished career, he reflected on his own achievements and failures, and that of those around him, and came to the following conclusion… “Compared to where we ought to be, we are only half-awake. Our fires are damped. Our drafts are checked. We are making use of only a small part of our mental and physical resources”

After I ran my first marathon, I started wondering what was next and if I was physically and mentally capable of more. Then, I came across the 7 Continent Club which is a small group of a few hundred people ACROSS THE WORLD who have run at least one marathon across all 7 continents. It dawned on me that all I needed to do was 2 things –  to keep trying and never quit.

As the great Les Brown once said, once you stop fighting for what you want, what you don’t want takes over. I kept fighting and reaching higher and successfully ran at least one marathon across every single continent.

So the question is are you fighting for what you want when you are capable of reaching higher?
